Why are the left and right making this issue rip our country apart instead of bringing us together?

To me it seems like the " better by comparison syndrome " everyone looking for examples to prove the other side is worse to justify their beliefs in their own party when in reality all sides totally suck..... why we keep taking up for politicians that honestly care less about us is crazy.. but im guessing its their point to divide us to ensure votes hence job security.
