Question about Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Series?

In A Breath of Snow and Ashes Jamie remembers coming face-to-face with Black Jack Randall at the Battle of Culloden. He is unable to move, staring into Randall's eyes. Murtagh comes running up behind Randall, stabs him with his dirk, misses the spot he was aiming for and Randall and Murtagh go rolling away locked in battle. Jamie goes to aid Murtagh. We don't know who actually kills Randall or if either of them does. Murtagh does die at Culloden, a part of Jamie's memory is Murtagh telling him it doesn't hurt to die. This memory is in Chapter 113 following the battle at Moore's Creek. It is really more in the nature of a flashback.
