I need some help with my future quilt?

Okay. So, I just picked up quilting. I really really enjoy it, and even though i just started with small quilts, i'm doing it by hand. I don't really know anybody else that quilts, and so, that's why i'm coming to you, Y!A. I want to make a lap quilt next. I think i'll lug out my sewing machine if I do this one, but still, that sewing machine is just a tiny tailor, nothing made for quilting. I really need to know how to do batting, (since i want this lined) But IF I do batting, that means I need to do quilt lines. Is there any simple quilt lines for me to do? Please help!
