Can i model while in college?

i'm wondering if modeling is lucrative in local markets (NYC) if I only do it locally and on weekends. I want to meet with agencies to sign but am not really sure what to expect of this career part time or if I would even be signed on a part time basis. I know my divisions would be editorial and commercial. thanks!
